Our story

A movement that began with one seedling.

Plantation Nurseries is the work of young Gambians who believe restoration is the defining act of our generation, and that the best forests are the ones we grow together.

Community gathering
The beginning

From a backyard in Banjul to a national restoration network.

In 2018, a small group of young environmentalists watched the coastline they grew up on shrink away. The mangroves were dying. The soil was thinning. The conversation was happening in capitals far from home.

So they started growing. First in pots, then in schoolyards, then across an entire river system. Today, Plantation Nurseries works with sixty communities to propagate native species, restore degraded land, and prove that the climate solutions West Africa needs already live here.

Mission

To restore ecosystems and empower the communities that protect them.

We propagate, plant, and nurture native species while building the technical, social and economic capacity of the communities we work with.

Vision

A West Africa where every landscape is a working classroom for climate resilience.

By 2035, every Gambian child grows up with a tree they planted, a forest they helped restore, and the skills to lead the next century of regeneration.

What we stand for

Six values, one root system.

Ecological integrity

Native species, no shortcuts. We restore as nature designed.

Community first

Every project is co-led with the people who steward the land.

Youth leadership

Climate action belongs to the generation living its consequences.

Radical transparency

Every seedling counted, every survival rate published.

Long horizons

We measure our work in decades, not press cycles.

Joyful work

Restoration is hopeful labor. We carry it with dignity and pride.

Philosophy

Sustainability is not a project. It is a relationship with land, with one another, and with the generations not yet born.

Our environmental practice is rooted in indigenous knowledge, disciplined ecological science, and the conviction that climate justice begins where the soil meets the hand.
